Nengtan Suspension Bridge crosses the Nengtan River on National Highway 319 (the Sichuan–Hunan Highway) within Luxi County, where the river valley is steep on both banks and the water is over 20 m deep. Designed by engineer Zhou Lifu and constructed under Ouyang Jian, it was built from March 1937 and opened to traffic in May 1938 at a cost of 69,000 silver dollars.   能滩吊桥位于川湘公路319国道泸溪县境内跨越能滩河,两岸河谷陡峻,水深达20 余米。该桥由工程师周立夫设计、欧阳缄负责施工,1937年3月修建,1938年5月建成通车,耗银洋69000元。吊桥跨径80米,高20米,桥面宽 4.5米,载重标准10吨。桥台为石砌,桥塔为空心圆柱式铸钢结构,高9米。悬索为链条式,由65节铸钢眼杆构成。悬链总长82.08米,横向间中距5 米,锚锭以槽钢构成框架,用混凝土埋置于两岸石壁锚洞之中。吊杆每边32根,桥面每侧以4根钢圆条作为风缆将桥面拉紧,以防水平摆动。

    能滩吊桥,饱经历史,已经走过了67年风霜雪雨,它曾为湘西地区的民族解放、经济文化建设做出过特殊贡献,如今,已静静地躺在一旁歇息了。1970年,能滩大桥建成,吊桥停止使用,作为文化遗产保存。
   
    1949年11月下旬,刘伯承,邓小平率领的第二野战军挺进西南就经过这里。在桥头现还有一烈士陵墓,当年他站在桥头守卫吊桥的时候不幸被敌人击中,如今吊桥和这位烈士一起被记入历史,默默地躺在那里。现在的吊桥,作为省重点文物保护单位,每年都要上漆维护,它依旧能绽放光彩。   

    该桥是我国公路上最早修建的现代钢链吊桥。
