Aizhai is located 15 km west of Jishou. It is surrounded by steep, towering mountains; its north slope has a vertical height of 440 m and a gradient of 70–90 degrees. Cars wind up from the foot to the top through 13 big bends, with magnificent views in all directions. Aizhai was the most perilous pass on the Hunan–Sichuan Highway, built in the 1930s. In 1987 the local government erected a bronze statue of the 'Pioneer of Road Opening' at the summit, 5.7 m tall and weighing nearly a ton, to commemorate those who built this highway.

矮寨位于吉首市西15公里处。四周皆为险峻巍峨的大山，其北坡，垂直高度440米，坡度70～90度。汽车从坡下到坡顶，盘旋而上，需转13道大弯，人坐车上，万千景色，尽收眼底。矮寨为湘川公路最险要关卡，30年代修建。1987年地方政府在山顶处立有“开路先锋”铜像一尊，高5.7米，重近一吨，以纪念在修此公路中牺牲的民工。矮寨坡下，有一独具湘西特色的苗寨，村寨内，鳞鳞的灰瓦吊脚楼，青青的石板路，十分和谐统一，恬适幽静。
