Archways were symbols of feudal society, common but usually simple. The two archways before and behind Zhuangyuan Bridge near the Chengguan cinema in Xiangyin far surpass ordinary ones. Built of stone blocks with mortise joints the same age as the bridge, they have stood firm for centuries.

牌楼、牌坊是封建社会的形体标志。或城或乡，无处不有，但一般均较简陋。在湘阴县城关电影院的状元桥前后的太和元气和肃然起敬的二只牌楼则远远超出于一般牌楼的水平。它与状元桥同岁，均系用块石砌成。整个牌楼只有石榫结构，虽然几百年丝毫末有走移。抗日战争时期，日本飞机滥炸城市，弹片仅擦破个别石面，留下斧削痕迹，而整个牌楼却岿然不动。足见我国古老的石工技艺水平高超。
