Dingwang Terrace lies deep in a lane south of Liuzheng Street and was a must-visit for literati in Changsha through the dynasties. For over two thousand years it has been celebrated in poetry and prose, so much so that Changsha was sometimes called Dingwang City. Liu Fa, tenth son of Emperor Jing of Han and known for filial piety, was enfeoffed as King of Changsha; he transported rice to Chang'an and brought back soil to build a 'Terrace for Watching Mother,' later called Dingwang Terrace. From 1912 to 1913 young Mao Zedong often visited.

定王台在浏正街南侧的小巷深处，是历朝文人到长沙后必去揽胜的地方。两千多年来，它一直被墨客所颂扬，诗文歌赋，吟唱不绝，以至有人把长沙城称为定王城。
定王刘发是汉景帝第十子，以“孝”著称。他封王长沙后，运大米至长安，带回京都之土累而筑“望母台”。望母台日后便叫定王台。
1912年秋到1913年春，青年毛泽东寄居在长沙新安巷湘乡试馆，天天步行到定王台图书馆看书，风雨无阻。
