Zibei Pavilion stands at the foot of Yuelu Mountain, just ahead and to the right of today's Hunan University Square. Built in 1688 during the Qing Kangxi reign at the initiative of Changsha official Zhao Ning, its name comes from the saying 'to ascend high, one must start low.' Square in plan and oriented east-west, it is a brick-and-timber structure with a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof, red pillars, green tiles, upturned eaves, and richly painted beams.

自卑亭在岳麓山下今湖南大学广场右前方。建于清康熙二十七年（公元1688）年，长沙郡丞赵宁倡建。取“若登高必自卑”之意，故名。平面呈正方形，东西向，砖木结构，重檐歇山顶，红柱碧瓦，飞檐翘角，雕梁画栋，装饰富丽。清李拔撰有自卑铭：“窃闻圣教，登高自卑。伦常日用，百姓与如。率由践履，变化固之，之墙何异，美富何奇。毋悲道远，毋泣路歧。循循下学，人圣之基”。
