湖南自修大学旧址在中山东路263号，原为曾国藩祠的一部分。光绪初，郭嵩焘在此创办思贤讲舍。1912年刘人熙将其易名为船山学社。1921年8月，毛泽东、何叔衡于中共“一大”后，取得社长仇亦山，总干事王季范等同意，在此创办湖南自修大学，李达为首任校长。
湖南自修大学本着“改造现社会”之宗旨，以自修的方式，研究各种学术，共同讨论，以造就人才，并注意脑力劳动与体力劳动结合，求德智体全面发展。
学社旧所毁于“文夕大火”。1954年修复部分房屋，为砖木结构的三进四合院，朱漆门窗方砖地，古香古色。门楣“船山学社”4字是毛泽东1950年题写。厅内陈列着自修大学的宣言，入学须知，教材，学员作业及何叔衡，夏明翰、毛泽民等人的照片生平，旧址为省文物保护单位。
