On October 10, 1921, Mao Zedong, He Shuheng, Peng Pingzhi, Yi Lirong, Chen Zibo, and other comrades established the Hunan Branch of the Communist Party of China in the woods beside Xiecaoping in Changsha. For the needs of secret work, Comrade Mao Zedong, in the name of a teacher at the First Normal School and concurrently head of its affiliated primary school, rented a three-bay single-story house at Qingshuitang outside Xiaowumen as the Party's underground organ, with a lease of 7 years. As cover, Yang Kaihui and Mother Yang, Mrs. Xiang, often lived here, and Mao Anying was also born here. In April 1923, Li Weihan succeeded as secretary of the Xiang District Committee, and the organ moved elsewhere.

The former site is now No. 126 Bayi Road. It is well preserved, and both the environment and furnishings have been restored to their original appearance. It is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit. On the east side there is a large exhibition hall, now the Changsha Museum.
